The NJ E-Bike Law Has Passed: Day 1 – What You Need to Know Right Now
Share
They’ve passed the law. And if you ride an e-bike, an e-moto, or a trike in New Jersey, this affects you.
As of today, the new NJ e-bike law has officially been signed into law. While enforcement is expected to begin in about six months, the changes themselves are immediate, and riders need to understand what this means right now.
What Changed With the New Law
Under the new law, e-bikes, e-motos, and electric trikes are now treated the same under New Jersey law. The previous Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3 distinctions no longer apply. In the eyes of the law, all of these vehicles are now considered identical.
This represents a significant shift.
Age, Licensing, and Registration Requirements
Here’s what the law currently requires:
-
Under 15 years old:
Riders under 15 will no longer be allowed to ride an e-bike, e-moto, or electric trike once enforcement begins. -
Ages 15–16:
Riders must obtain a moped license, and the bike must be registered and insured. -
Ages 17 and older:
Riders must hold a driver’s license, and the bike must also be registered and insured.
Although the law is effective immediately, enforcement is expected to begin in approximately six months, giving riders time to prepare.
A Serious Gap in the Law
One of the most concerning aspects of the new law is that there are currently no provisions for disabled riders.
For example, a 15-year-old with cognitive challenges who cannot obtain a driver’s license would be excluded from riding, even if an e-bike or trike is their primary means of mobility.
This is a serious issue that needs to be addressed.
What Comes Next
The good news is that another bill, S3178, has already been introduced. This bill acknowledges gaps and unintended consequences in the current law and aims to address them.
This is the legislation we’ll be watching closely.
For now, if you or your child is under 15, riding an e-bike, e-moto, or trike will no longer be permitted once enforcement begins within the next six months.
I’ll continue to share updates as this develops. Thank you for your support and for staying informed.
