The NJ E-Bike Law: Day 4 – What This Really Means for Business and Riders

Over the past day, I’ve seen a few comments suggesting that this new law will be devastating for our business. I want to address that directly.

Honestly, I don’t think that’s the case.

Who This Law Really Affects

This law doesn’t impact everyone equally. Where it truly creates problems is for disabled riders and for people who rely on e-bikes as their primary means of transportation but cannot obtain a driver’s license for a variety of reasons.

Those are the riders I’m concerned about, and those are the gaps I’m continuing to speak up about.

Why Business Isn’t the Core Issue

We sell a lot of bikes that remain perfectly legal under the new law. For customers who already have a driver’s license and are willing to insure their bike, there’s been very little change.

Personally, I’ve insured my own bikes for years — even before opening an e-bike shop. For me, having that protection just made sense.

I know not everyone feels that way, but insurance itself isn’t what worries me most here.

What We’re Seeing in the Shop

We are seeing some customers who want to sell their higher-speed bikes, and we’re helping them do that through consignment. At the same time, there are buyers actively looking for those bikes because they plan to use them legally and as intended.

In other words, there is still demand.

On top of that, we have a strong service department. We service everything, and that part of our business continues to be steady and reliable.

The Bigger Picture

From where I’m standing, this law isn’t particularly bad for business. What it is, however, is problematic for riders who depend on e-bikes for independence and mobility and are now facing new barriers.

That’s where the focus needs to stay.

As always, thank you for your support. I’ll continue sharing updates and real-world perspective as this situation develops.
