The NJ E-Bike Law: Day 36 – Advocacy Behind the Scenes

Today marks Day 36 since the New Jersey e-bike law was signed.

From the outside, it may seem like not much is happening. But that could not be further from the truth.

Advocating Hard Behind the Scenes

There is a tremendous amount of work happening right now — drafting language, aligning stakeholders, and pushing for a properly structured fixed bill.

The process is detailed and deliberate. First, agreement must be reached on clear and responsible legislative language. Then that language must be submitted and a sponsor secured — either a senator or an assembly member willing to introduce the amended bill.

This is where we are.

The 90-Day Regulation Freeze

We are currently within a 90-day regulatory freeze period. Approximately 60 days remain.

This window matters.

During a freeze, regulations are not finalized. That means implementation details are not locked in, and advocacy carries greater influence.

This is when voices are most effective.

We Need Specific Voices

I recently asked for constituents in three specific towns:

• Carteret
• Woodbridge
• Linden

If you are a resident or business owner in one of those towns, your voice is especially important at this stage.

We also need to hear from:

• Delivery drivers affected by the law
• Bike rental operators experiencing business impact
• Disabled riders whose independence is at risk

Targeted outreach strengthens legislative conversations.

Why This Is Personal

As I record this, I’m outside after a major blizzard. Jesse is sledding nearby.

Jesse is 15. He has autism. He rides his e-trike with purpose and independence.

This advocacy is not abstract. It is personal.

While we continue working on legislative language and sponsorship, life continues — families, communities, and small businesses moving forward.

But we cannot slow down now.

This window of influence will not remain open forever.
