The NJ E-Bike Law: Day 32 – One Month Later

The NJ E-Bike Law: Day 32 – One Month Later

It has been just over a month since the New Jersey e-bike law was passed.

Today’s update is a check-in — both business-wise and advocacy-wise.

Community Support Continues

We had a visit from a town council member from Red Bank, who stopped by simply to show support and let us know she stands behind us.

She will also be attending the upcoming New Jersey Bike & Walk Coalition Summit, where this issue will continue to be discussed.

Support at the local level matters. These conversations are spreading beyond bike shops and into municipal leadership.

How Is Business Doing?

With a snowstorm approaching, not many people are thinking about e-bikes today. Still, we’ve had a couple of test rides and several throughout the week.

We’ve sold a few bikes, and consignment used bikes have been moving well.

Overall, business seems to be tracking normally for February.

However, nearly every customer who walks in wants to talk about the law.

What Customers Are Saying

Most riders agree that what were formerly known as Class 1 bikes should not require a license, registration, or insurance.

There is strong consensus that low-speed, pedal-assist bikes — and even low-speed throttle bikes under 20 mph — should not be regulated the same way as high-powered e-motos.

Customers consistently express frustration about lumping fundamentally different vehicles together.

At the same time, many of our current buyers are older and already hold driver’s licenses, so they are less immediately concerned about compliance.

We have not seen a large influx of younger riders recently, though that may be seasonal.

Where We Go From Here

One month in, the conversations are not slowing down.

We still believe the law needs to be amended, clarified, or replaced with legislation that properly distinguishes between low-speed e-bikes and high-speed e-motos.

If you care about this issue, continue contacting your legislators.

Change does not happen automatically — it happens when people stay engaged.
