The NJ E-Bike Law: Day 31 – Bike Shops Are Uniting

Today’s update highlights something important: bike shops across New Jersey are coming together.

Jason from The Highlander in Atlantic Highlands stopped by the shop to talk about the New Jersey e-bike law and what a reasonable fix might look like.

Working Toward a Practical Solution

We walked the showroom floor together, looking at the different models and discussing how the law currently treats them — and how it should.

The key issue is clarity.

Bicycles should be treated as bicycles. E-motos should be treated as e-motos. There is a place for both, but they should not be lumped together under one confusing regulatory structure.

Is Every Shop Seeing the Same Impact?

When asked whether he had seen a major shift in sales since the law was announced, Jason noted that it has not been dramatic at his location — likely due in part to winter weather.

However, the broader concern is not just short-term sales.

It’s about long-term stability, community impact, and regulatory clarity.

This Affects More Than Shops

As we discussed, the law’s impact extends beyond retailers and riders.

It affects communities.

It affects accessibility.

It affects how transportation options are structured across New Jersey.

When small businesses, riders, and advocates begin having coordinated conversations about solutions, that matters.

Shops are not competing in this moment. They are collaborating.
