The NJ E-Bike Law: Day 24 – The Small Business Impact, Part 3
Share
Today’s update continues the look at how the new NJ e-bike law is affecting small businesses — and the community spaces they create.
More Than a Showroom
This is where we set up test rides. This is our showroom — a space many of you have seen during past broadcasts.
We carry something for everyone: bikes for kids, scooters, stand-up models, seated models, and all the safety equipment riders could need.
Safety has always been a priority here.
A Space Designed for Community
Beyond retail, we built this shop to be welcoming and inclusive. There’s a space for customers to sit and relax. Our team members can take breaks comfortably. We provide filtered water and clean restrooms.
But there’s something else that makes this shop different.
The Sensory Room
We built a sensory room — originally for Jesse.
When he’s here, he can step away and decompress. It’s a quiet, calm environment with fidget toys, beanbags, blankets, and soft seating.
Even kids without autism enjoy using it as a place to relax.
We clean it regularly, and we are intentional about making this shop accessible and welcoming to neurodivergent riders and families.
Future Plans Now at Risk
One of our upcoming goals was to hire autistic workers.
We’ve been in active conversations with the local high school about partnering with their special needs job program. Students would come here with a job coach and learn valuable workplace skills.
There are countless ways they could contribute and grow here.
But if this business cannot remain stable because of the new law, those opportunities disappear.
What’s Really at Stake
This isn’t just about selling bikes.
It’s about inclusive employment, accessible spaces, adaptive mobility, and community support.
When legislation destabilizes small businesses like this one, the ripple effects reach far beyond inventory and sales.
