The NJ E-Bike Law: Day 24 – The Small Business Impact, Part 2

Today’s update is another look at what this law means for small businesses — not in theory, but in reality.

This isn’t just about legislation. It’s about what happens inside the walls of a local bike shop every day.

More Than Just a Store

This is our service area — where we repair bikes that are deeply important to the people who ride them. These bikes aren’t luxuries. For many customers, they are transportation, independence, and freedom.

We also carry used and new bikes, and this is where we greet customers when they walk through the door.

Over in another section are our trikes — including one reserved for a recipient of Three Wheels from Jesse.

Expansion Plans on Hold

Earlier this year, we planned to expand our rental fleet. Rentals were going to be a key area of growth for our business.

Now, those expansion plans are paused because of the uncertainty created by the new law.

That decision directly affects revenue, growth opportunities, and long-term sustainability.

Impact on Young Workers

This shop also employs high school students.

They come here to learn how to work, build responsibility, and gain real-world experience. We see it as part of our responsibility to teach them how to succeed in the working world.

We pay them above minimum wage. We invest in them.

If the shop struggles or closes because of this law, those opportunities disappear.

The Bigger Picture

Small businesses are more than storefronts. They are employers, mentors, service providers, and community anchors.

When legislation creates instability, it doesn’t just affect inventory — it affects people.
