The NJ E-Bike Law: Day 212 – We Met With Senator Sarlo

Today marks Day 212 since New Jersey's e-bike law was signed, and the fight to fix the law continues.

On August 19, 2026, we had an excellent meeting with Senator Paul Sarlo to discuss the problems and unintended consequences created by the new e-bike law.

Senator Sarlo Saw the Issues

According to Shannon, it did not take long for Senator Sarlo to understand the concerns surrounding the law.

One of the biggest concerns is the impact the law has on people with disabilities. But the problems go beyond accessibility. As the meeting progressed, it became clear that there are broader issues with the law that need to be addressed.

The meeting was scheduled for an hour, but within about 30 minutes, there was little more to discuss. The concerns were clear.

Waiting Until the Fall

Unfortunately, August is the legislative recess, meaning immediate action is unlikely.

Senator Sarlo mentioned that work could resume in October or possibly November. While that means waiting a little longer, the effort to address the law is continuing.

Fixing Unintended Consequences

One of the realities of the legislative process is that laws can sometimes create unintended consequences after they are put into practice.

When those problems become apparent, the next step is to work with legislators to make the necessary changes.

That is where the fight currently stands.

After months of advocacy, meetings, and conversations with lawmakers, the goal remains the same: fix the New Jersey e-bike law.

As Shannon put it, the fight is not over, and there is confidence that these issues can be addressed.

We're going to fix it.
