The NJ E-Bike Law: Day 159 – Understanding the Law and the Call for a Fix
Share
Today marks Day 159 since the New Jersey e-bike law was signed.
This update explains the legislation behind the current e-bike law, identifies the lawmakers who sponsored it, and discusses why advocates believe legislative action is still needed.
Understanding the Law
The law currently in effect is Public Law 2025, Chapter 285. While many riders know it by its original bill number, S4834, amendments were made before it was signed into law.
Advocates encourage riders to review the final enacted law when discussing its impact, as it is the version that governs current requirements.
Who Sponsored the Legislation?
The law was sponsored by Senate President Nicholas Scutari, Senator Paul Moriarty, Assemblyman James Kennedy, Assemblywoman Linda Carter, and Assemblyman Sterley Stanley.
Advocates believe these lawmakers played a key role in advancing the legislation that has significantly changed how certain e-bikes are regulated in New Jersey.
Continuing Concerns
Supporters of reform argue that the law has created unintended consequences for some riders, particularly individuals with disabilities who are unable to obtain a driver's license but rely on e-bikes as an important form of transportation.
They also point out that New Jersey has had laws regulating higher-powered electric motorcycles since 2019, but practical pathways for licensing, registration, and insurance have remained limited.
A Call for Legislative Action
Advocates continue urging lawmakers to introduce and advance legislation that would address the concerns raised since the law took effect.
They encourage affected riders and New Jersey residents to share their experiences with elected officials and explain how the current law has impacted their mobility, businesses, and daily lives.
The goal remains to create clear regulations that improve safety while preserving access to low-speed e-bikes for the people who depend on them.
The work continues.
