The NJ E-Bike Law: Day 13 – Why I Had to Cancel a Fundraiser
Share
Today’s update is a difficult one to share, but it’s an important example of the real-world fallout from New Jersey’s new e-bike law.
Since the law passed, I’ve had to make the decision to stop all fundraising efforts connected to e-trikes — including canceling a fundraiser that was scheduled for March 8.
Why This Fundraiser Mattered
For those who may not know, I founded a nonprofit called Three Wheels from Jesse. Through this organization, we gift electric trikes to individuals on the autism spectrum so they can get to work, get to school, spend time with their families, and experience independence through mobility.
These trikes are not recreational toys. They are lifelines.
What Changed After the Law Passed
The trikes we provide are Class 2 e-trikes. Under the new law, the individuals who receive them would now be required to pass a driver’s license test, a moped license test, or a motorized bicycle test.
For many of the people we serve, that simply isn’t possible.
A Real Example
Jesse is a perfect example. He can control his trike beautifully. He rides safely, responsibly, and confidently.
But he cannot take a written test or a verbal test.
That distinction matters — because the ability to pass a standardized test does not reflect someone’s ability to safely operate an adaptive mobility device.
The Consequences
Because of this law, the people who would have received trikes through our nonprofit are now at risk of losing access to this form of transportation entirely.
This is the reality of the legislation as it stands today.
It’s why I had to cancel the fundraiser. And it’s why I’m continuing to fight for changes, carve-outs, and amendments that recognize the needs of disabled riders.
Why This Fight Continues
This law has real consequences for real people. It removes independence from those who rely on e-trikes for daily life, not recreation.
That’s what I’m advocating for — and why these stories matter.
