The NJ E-Bike Law: Day 108 – Inside the Legislative Outreach Effort

The NJ E-Bike Law: Day 108 – Inside the Legislative Outreach Effort

Day 108 provides one of the clearest looks yet at the behind-the-scenes work happening to challenge and improve New Jersey’s e-bike law.

For months, many riders have heard that meetings and advocacy efforts were taking place, but without much public visibility into the process. This update finally explains why.

Why Progress Is Hard To Show Publicly

One of the biggest challenges in political advocacy is balancing transparency with strategy.

Sharing too much information too early can weaken negotiations, reveal plans, or create unintended political pressure that hurts long-term efforts.

That is why many of the discussions surrounding the law have happened quietly behind the scenes since January.

The Weekly Tuesday Meetings

Every Tuesday morning, advocates, organizations, and industry representatives meet to coordinate efforts surrounding the New Jersey e-bike law.

These meetings include national, state, regional, and local organizations working together on legislative strategy.

Among the groups participating:

  • PeopleForBikes
  • New Jersey Bike & Walk Coalition
  • Hudson County Complete Streets
  • Bike JC
  • Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia
  • Union County Connects
  • Regional Planning Association
  • Independent advocates and bicycle industry veterans

PeopleForBikes plays a particularly important role because they help coordinate and draft bicycle legislation nationwide.

According to the update, the same legal and policy experts involved in legislation across states like California, Utah, Illinois, Connecticut, and Florida are participating in these New Jersey discussions.

The New Jersey eBike Shop Coalition

The update also highlighted the formation of the New Jersey eBike Shop Coalition.

This coalition reportedly includes more than 100 bike shops across the state working together to advocate for changes to the law.

Industry relationships and long-standing connections within the bicycle world have helped bring shops, manufacturers, and advocates together into a coordinated effort.

The Legislative Outreach Tracker

One of the most significant reveals in Day 108 was the legislative outreach tracker.

This shared tracking system organizes outreach efforts to senators, assembly members, and even the governor’s office.

The tracker reportedly includes:

  • Legislator names
  • Political party affiliation
  • Voting history on the bill
  • Meeting schedules
  • Discussion notes
  • Materials shared with lawmakers

The advocacy team also uses district maps and regional analysis to identify areas where outreach is still needed.

According to the update, gaps remain in several parts of South Jersey, portions of Central Jersey, and scattered districts in North Jersey.

A Coordinated Statewide Effort

What Day 108 makes clear is that this is no longer just a small group of riders speaking out online.

The effort now involves coordinated statewide advocacy, national legislative organizations, local transportation groups, industry professionals, and hundreds of businesses working together toward legislative change.

While much of the strategy still cannot be discussed publicly, this update provides tangible proof that organized outreach and legislative engagement are happening continuously behind the scenes.
