As of April, 2026, it appears low-speed e-bikes (formerly Class 1 and 2) are allowed on the 6-mile paved Multi-Use Path (MUP) and main roads in the Sandy Hook Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area. E-bikes must follow the same rules as traditional bicycles, including a 10 mph speed limit on the MUP. They are prohibited on hiking trails and beaches.
Great for leisure riders and families.
Hartshorne Woods Park (Buttermilk Valley Entrance)
~5 miles from shop
A wooded, hilly park with dirt and gravel trails winding through forest and along ridgelines with views of the Navesink River. The terrain includes climbs, descents, and uneven surfaces, giving it a more rugged feel than paved paths. As of April 2026, low-speed e-bikes (formerly Class 1 and 2) appear to be allowed on designated trails.
Not ideal for beginners or for a fully relaxed ride on rental e-bikes.
Best for confident riders on wider, less technical trails.
