The NJ E-Bike Law: Days 76 & 78 – Disability Access and MVC Registration Questions
Share
Today’s update combines two short but important moments from Days 76 and 78 in the New Jersey e-bike law series.
Both updates highlight the disconnect between how this law was written and how it affects real riders in the real world.
Day 76: A Reminder About Disabled Riders
Seventy-six days after the law was signed, one reality still stands out above everything else.
The New Jersey e-bike law immediately made it illegal for many disabled riders to continue using the devices they depend on for mobility, independence, and daily life.
That impact cannot be ignored.
For disabled residents who rely on e-bikes, trikes, and adaptive mobility devices, this law was never an abstract policy discussion. It changed what daily access looks like overnight.
This remains one of the most urgent reasons why the law needs to be fixed.
Day 78: Where Are Riders Supposed to Park?
Another major issue became clear during a visit to the Eatontown Motor Vehicle Commission.
If riders are expected to register their bikes at MVC locations, where are they supposed to safely lock those bikes while they are inside completing paperwork?
At the Eatontown MVC, there appeared to be no visible bike racks and no clear place for riders to securely lock up an e-bike.
That raises a basic but important implementation question.
How can the state require in-person registration for bikes without providing safe bike parking at the agency locations handling those registrations?
This is exactly the kind of practical issue that shows how disconnected the law is from real rider experience.
The Bigger Problem
These short moments reveal the same larger issue.
The law created barriers first and left basic implementation questions unanswered.
Disabled access, rider safety, and even something as simple as secure bike parking at MVC offices should have been considered before requirements were imposed.
As we continue pushing for legislative fixes, these real-world examples help show why change is still urgently needed.
